Raised
on the New Jersey Shore, (Brielle area) and boating on
the Barnegat Bay from early childhood. Every free
minute of all the "teen years" I worked on the
local commercial fishing boats year round. On off
days I raced all types of sailboats... from Barnegat Bay
"sneak boxes", Lightnings, Marshall Cats to
ocean racing yachts. During the Nasty winters I was
an apprentice carpenter and rigger with Johnson Brothers
boat Yard. Here is where I received the ground
floor of understanding how wooden yachts were made.
At JBs we replanked and double planked many yachts each
winter. The basics of sailing yacht rigging was
preached to me by Capt. Winfield Scott (1st captain of
the TICONDEROGA), Capt. Stew Purchase (builder and
Captain of the Schooner EMMA C BERRY) and Capt. Sam
Mossmen who (Chief mate on one of the last working
commercial square riggers plying the Atlantic). I
was lucky to experience the change over period in
yachting construction from wood to fiberglass. As I
was very interested in what fiberglass was all about I
took a part time job at the local builder of Bay Head
Skiffs. I learned a great deal there but in time
the first gas crunch shut down the factory. As all
the fishing boats were steel I had a wonderful education
in both repair and maintenance of same.
Additionally (through necessity) I learned how to
maintain Detroit Diesels and some good seamanship.
In my early 20's I did many deliveries which extended as
far as Bermuda and the Virgin Islands. To gain
additional large boat experience I accepted some winter
positions as captain on some large Burgers and eventually
a mini cruise ship carrying 150 passengers for 14 day
trips throughout the Bahamas. Here is where I
earned a masters pilot license for the Bahamian waters
for ships of all sizes. However yachts were my
prime interest each summer I went back to Barnegat Bay as
I was home sick for "the pineys". In 1970
I met Al Jacukiewicz and we
came down to Annapolis for the first Sailboat show.
This introduction set the Annapolis stage for the rest of
my life. Al moved down shortly there after and I
followed in 1974... NEVER LEFT. Since 1975 the
sale, repair, and charter of yachts have been my only
interest.

After
a successful career in marketing and negotiating
international financing and leasing, Jack, in 1985,
turned his long time avocation into a full time
vocation. As a youth in Minnesota he sailed inland
scows on Lake Minnetonka and raced a classic wooden Chris Craft powerboat on the St. Croix River. As an
adult, he seriously raced and cruised sailboats and
cruised in trawlers primarily on the Chesapeake Bay, but
also in Florida and in the Caribbean.
As a result of all of these experiences, Jack can be very
helpful to you in combining his previously acquired
negotiating and interpersonal skills with his
"boating savvy".
