ACCOMMODATIONS AND LAYOUT:
According
to the Herreshoff Manufacturing Company Builder’s Plaque which is
affixed to her bulkhead, Wasp’s official number is 1502.
When the current owner's purchased her around 1996, she was at the
Herreshoff
Museum
in
Bristol
,
Rhode
Island
where
she was built. She was
acquired from a staff member of the Museum.
At the time of the purchase it was discovered that her original name was
Wasp, and that is the name under which she has been sailed.
According to the historic records of the
Herreshoff
Museum
, 1502
was contracted on
4/18/1939
for
Arthur C. Dorrance at a cost of $775.
The HMCo is believed to have built 364, 12 ½’s. From the
construction records it appears that 12 were built after #1502, so she
must have been the 352nd built.
She is listed in the construction records at the museum as an
"improved model" which means that she has wider side decks,
copper flotation tanks, a raised lazarette, and an over the transom
tiller. We have no records of other owners.
She
is now 64 years old. Her
recent improvements include extensive rebuilding work done by the
recognized wooden boat builder, Rick Prose, of Finest Kind Wooden Boats in
Boothbay
Harbor
,
Maine
.
Her transom, garboards and shear strakes have been replaced, as
have 22 ribs and 8 floors. She has been completely refastened and is now
fitted out with new spars, a new set of sails, a custom trailer, and a new
over the boom cockpit cover.
She is now ready to be finished. Experts
suggest it will take two to three days for her seams to swell after which
she will be caulked and finished to her seamless condition.
Photos
were taken near the end of her restoration in Maine.
